Abstract: Research Article Abstracts in International Journals: Unity and Diversity
                          Professor Dr. Budsaba Kanoksilapatham
Faculty of Management Science, Silpakorn University

Associate Fellow of the Academy of Arts,

Research articles are one of the most crucial channels of communication
in academia world-wide. Meanwhile, English has attained the status of the
international language infiltrating all aspects of our daily life. Consequently,
English research articles have received substantial attention, becoming one of
the ultimate goals of academic endeavors. This article highlights some of the
author’s perspectives regarding English research article abstracts based on
discourse analysis. Initially, six abstracts pertaining to highly cited articles across
six academic disciplines were selected and scrutinized to identify their abstract
components. These six abstracts seem to adhere to a pattern of organization,
featuring five components in the sequence of, namely, background, purpose,
methods, results, and discussion. The abstracts thus seem to display inherent
unity. However, after analyzing additional abstracts, the structural pattern was
found to vary to a certain extent. That is, the abstracts did not always
feature the 5-component structure, revealing the absence or presence of other
components, resulting in organizational diversity. This finding reflects the impact
of a number of abstract writing variables, including the nature of individual
academic disciplines, the characteristics of the research being presented,
research contexts, and specific disciplines’ preferences. Thus, clear and better
understanding of the unity and diversity shaping abstracts can facilitate novice
researchers who have limited abstract writing experience in this academic
writing task, enhancing their English academic reading and writing competence
and disseminating academic work through quality abstracts in an international
                         forum.
