fiction called Liâtkók (เลียดิก๊ก). When the word was borrowed into Thai, its
meaning was generalized to include any saber. However, after examining
historical documents of the chronicle type, it was found that a part of the text
stating that the Persian merchant presented one of the kânyàn as a gift to King
Narai when he was the crown prince. When consulting the questionable
target language, it was discovered the Persian word khanjar (رجنخ) meant
‘a dagger’. By analyzing its word form, meaning, characteristics and the role of
this weapon in both Persian and Thai culture, it is confirmed that the etymon
of the Thai word kânyàn is derived from the aforementioned Persian word.
The etymon of this word also assists us in deducing the true shape and
characteristics of kânyàn in Thai culture, allowing us to provide the correct
definition of this word.
