Abstract: Samuel Beckett’s En attendant Godot

Samuel Beckett’s En attendant Godot has been produced several
times on many stages around the world. The play, written in the Absurdist
Style during the 1950’s, was influenced by the surrealists and the dadaïstes

which arose from the after–effects of World War II. The gist of the play is how
nonsensical life can be. It is absurd to wait for something that is yet to happen,
something that does not have a clear meaning or definition. Hence, this play has
no plot, no theme and no conventional composition to represent the emptiness,
senselessness, incommunicability and unhappy nature of human life. Life is a
wait–the endless waiting game overwhelmed with worries of not knowing what
one is waiting for or when it will end. Such a non-traditional composition of a

play was the trend during this post-war era. It emphasizes the abstractness of
life. This article aims to analyze the philosophy in the play in comparison to
the philosophy in the real world during that time. It aims to approach the play
from the readers’ perspective (le lecteur) as reading from the book, not as a la
mise en scène.
