Abstract: Landscape architecture development of the royal crematorium, Phra
Meru Mas.

Phra Meru Mas, the Thai royal crematorium, signifies in Buddhist
cosmology as the universe concept comprises Mount Sumeru. The funeral pyre
was built to send the god-king “Devar ja” back to heaven. Landscape architecture,
as the science of outdoor space design, plays an important role to create the
functional spaces, the aesthetic and the interpretation. Therefore, this study aims
to analyze the landscape characters and evolution of landscape architecture in

the creation of Phra Meru Mas. The analysis bases on the historical evidences
retrieved from the early Rattanakosin period. By divided into four historical
periods, it was found that the royal crematorium landscape planning and
details of each time differed according to three issues. The first is in terms of
functionality, the second is the ornaments that emphasize the concept of
religious beliefs and philosophy, finally the interpretations of specific stories
appearing in the ceremonial sphere. Lastly, the developments in landscape

architecture are becoming more prominent at the Royal Cremation Ceremony
of His Majesty the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. When the landscape design
symbolizes king's multifarious duties and transformed them into a memorial of
remembrance, as the unprecedented example in the history of Phra Meru Mas.
