The Royal Society of Thailand
The Royal Society of Thailand was first established by His Majesty
King Rama VII on 19 April 1926 to “bestow the academics to serve the
kingdom” but the appointment of the Associate Fellow occurred in 1934
after the democracy revolution when the Royal Society of Thailand had
been changed to the Royal Institute of Thailand. There were 30 Associate
Fellows appointed and 11 of them served in the Academy of Science that
had played an important role for the advance in 10 major fields in science,
including mathematics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, botany, medicine,
physics, geography, engineering, and zoology; 2 Associate Fellows served in
medicine. Later, in 1942, there were 52 Fellows bestowed by the King and
34 of them served the Academy of Science-6 in physical sciences, 7 in
biological sciences, and 21 in applied sciences. Eight of the first 11 Associate
Fellows were bestowed to be Fellows. Among the other 3 Associate Fellows,
one passed away one year earlier and the others had worked and served
for their units and societies at full scales. Noteworthy was that 4 Associate
Fellows received funding from Prince Mahidol for their higher education
abroad and all of them returned to serve the country. The archival research
confirms that the first Thai professor was Phra Abbhantrabadhbisal
(Kamchorn Balankura) who was one of the first 11 Associate Fellows,
later bestowed to be Fellow and eventually Honorary Fellow
