Abstract: The Open Door Policy: Paving the Way for US Intervention in East Asia
before WW II

The Open Door Policy was US foreign policy towards China and East
Asia declared through the Open Door Notes in 1899 and 1900. It aimed to
maintain American merchants’ interest in East Asia, particularly in China
which was facing seriously threats of Western Powers and Japanese
exploitation in its homeland. After since, the United States claimed this
policy in intervening conflicts in East Asia through the first half of
Twentieth Century. As a reason, US interventions caused impacts to
Japanese interest in East Asia, and also brought about US-Japan confrontations
that led these two nations to be opponent in the World War II.
