Abstract: From Seals to Official Emblems

Affixation of seals impression by minister and officials had been present
from the Ayutthaya period to Rattanakosin. Phra Thammanun in the Law of
Three Seals had indicated the nobility’s authority to use official seals for
official tasks, which was of the utmost importance in showing authority and

authenticity of official documents when signing has not yet been performed.
Later on, signing along with official seals, and then signing alone, were instead
practiced for the same purpose. Officials had used seals until after Siamese
revolution of 1932, then switched to official emblems; however, some still
retained the use of official seals in addition to signing in official documents.
A number of seals were also found to consist in various official emblems of
organizations with long-standing history and power. Historical events in regards

to seal impressions reflect the clockworks of public administration in the past
and its evolution, hence sealed documents are considered valuable evidence
in studying the authority and administration of the official system in different
periods of Thai history.
