Abstract: Religion and Ecology: A Case of Buddhism

Since the second half of the past century changes in the global climate
and environment have been extensively studied under ecological paradigm
and perspectives. In an effort to understand this issue several scholars view
religion as playing an important role in providing worldview and ethical
framework for relationship with other beings.

This paper argues that Buddhism has much to contribute, directly and
indirectly, to the solution of the environmental and ecological crises. These may
be seen partly in the historical context of Buddhism and partly in numerous
teachings commonly known as buddha-dharma recorded in the Buddhist Texts.
In particular, this paper notes that many scholars have regarded the teaching
of paticcasamuppãda (dependent origination) as an important foundation of
the modern ecological principles. In addition, there are also numerous teachings

that provide ethical framework for equal relationship between humans and
other beings in the natural world. Some examples of such teachings, briefly
presented here, include mettã (loving kindness), karunã (compassion), mattaññutã
(moderation), and pañca-sila (the five precepts).
