Abstract: Taboo words and euphemisms in Thai

Proper use of language is governed by not only grammatical rules but
also social norms. An obvious example is the use of swear words, cusswords,
curse words, and hate speech. Most of these words are vulgar, derived from
taboo words that are prohibited by society and are supposed to be replaced

by euphemistic words. This article aims to investigate the relationship
between all such types of words to comprehend the current trend in language
use. The results indicate that taboo words emerge because of human fear of
powerful beings, the belief that certain things or activities are too offensive or
disgraceful to speak out about, and also social status and situations. For this
reason, taboo words have terrifying and derogatory connotations that are
considered vulgar. People in society, therefore, use euphemisms instead.

However, some people use taboo words for swearing, cussing, cursing, and
expressing hatred. When society evolves, old taboo words may become
commonplace, and commonplace words may become taboo. This results in
the creation of new euphemisms in the language.
