Abstract: Ceramic Decoration with Lace

Nowadays, the ceramic area is highly competitive, especially in the field
of design, which is a detailed and complex process with many elements, such as
raw materials, decoration techniques and manufacturing processes. This article

aims to explain the process of decorating a ceramic with lace to create a lace
ceramic. The knowledge is based on the results of the author’s experiments.
The findings show that making lace ceramics can create a variety of patterns
for ceramic works, both in terms of sculpture and usefulness by creating
decorative details that are flowing and airy. Good design planning makes the
lace a harmonious part of the structure of the ceramic piece. Regarding the
forming of a lace ceramic, it can be done in several ways. Many types of clay

mixes can be used. Glazing the work on bone dry clay by one firing will solve
the problem of brittle work during glazing on biscuits. It was found that lace
ceramics obtained from one firing were not different from bisque firing and
then glazing. Thus, this process can save energy, labor and time in production.
The technique of making lace ceramics can be used to repair cracks even after
high firing by using lace dipped in slip mixed with cola over the cracked area,
glazing and then re-firing the ceramics.
