The German Lying Stories or The Lying Baron, is considered to be the
adventurous stories of Baron von Münchhausen, or Freiherr von Münchhausen,
whose full name is Hieronymus Carl Friedrich von Münchhausen. His adventures
are widely known in Germany as books and films. In Thailand, the story of
Münchhausen, the Baron of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, has been made known
to the Thai public through the translation of Her Royal Highness Princess
Maha Chakri Sirinthorn with the title The German Lying Stories of Baron von
Münchhausen (2014).
It has been said that the real Münchhausen is the same person as
Baron von Münchhausen, the story teller. From his unbelievable adventurous
life stories, especially his experiences from a good many battle fields in various
countries and various towns, the Baron became very famous and well known
as The Lying Baron.
The house of Baron Carl Friedrich von Münchhausen in Bodenwerder
now functions as the Münchhausen Museum. His adventurous stories often
include more details added by many authors over time, making them “new”.
This article aims to describe the origin of these adventurous stories, how they
relate to the actual life of Baron von Münchhausen, and also whether the stories
are based on literary tradition.
