Abstract: Driving sustainable development with University living learning lab
Professor Emeritus Dr. Chanita Rukspollmuang
Associate Fellow of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences,

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was launched in
2015 by the United Nations to transform our world by driving the 17
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which include economic, social,
and environmental dimensions. Thailand, as a member of UN, thus has
included this agenda in the 20-Year National Strategy and major development
plans. Nevertheless, the latest 2023 Sustainable Development Report
showed that all the 17 goals are likely not to be achieved in the expected
year of 2030. Education has thus been recognized as a prime mover of
sustainable development as UNESCO adopted the Berlin Declaration
on Education for Sustainable Development in 2021, followed the declaration
of UN first 2004 Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and
its amendments. The author has adopted the principles of Living Lab (LL)
which aims to develop a user-driven open innovation ecosystem focusing
on synergizing cooperation among partners and real-life experience to
drive sustainable development. Two models were developed; namely,
the “Triangle of Living Learning Lab” and the “UPC4Local SDGs Action
Model”. The former is a structural reform model based on the Whole-
Institution Approach (WIA) including 3 dimensions-the university, the
educational program, and the learning ecosystems. The latter is a
participatory action model comprises of 4 Cos - Co-Create, Co-Design,
Co-Develop, and Co-Reflect. These models were proposed with the hope
that university will be a learning platform for campus and community
sustainability.
