Abstract: Thai language of the “old” and the “young-old”

This paper points out the difference of Thai Language as used by
different living generations: Generation T (Traditionalist), Generation B (Baby
Boomers), Generation X, Generation Y (The Millennials) and Generation Z.
The difference, however, not only depends on the age but also the physical
and mental health, including emotional literacy of the individual. The idea
of “young–old” and “old–old” is thus introduced, describing individuals who
differ from others in their age group. The paper points out that the “young–old”
is apt to recognize and adapt to fit the current language change. A scenario
of the Thai Language in the next 20 years is also presented, based on the
quantity (age group) and the quality (physical and mental condition, including
emotional literacy) of the speakers.
