In Figure 6, current words with additional or new meanings, new words,
and new spellings are included in the new vocabulary. For example, the fruit
name ลำำไย [lamyai] carries another meaning, as รำำคญ [ramkhan], “to be
disturbed.”A new word introduced is ตะมุุตะมุิ [tamutami], meaning “lovely.”
An ห is added to the spelling of สนอง, making it สหนอง. Whether this practice
will change the language itself is yet to be seen.

Linguistically, this is a natural phenomenon; new words have always
been devised to enable some kind of communication. If language users can
communicate using these words, they will survive as long as they can connect
people. Those that fail to serve the purpose will eventually disappear.

The Disappearance of Some Practices in Thai Language Teaching

In the days when there were only a few students in the class, teaching
students to write was mostly done by holding and guiding the student’s hand
until the he could write on his own. Later, when classes increased in size, a new
practice was introduced, with textbooks featuring lines and arrows for students
to follow by themselves. With the arrival of computers, this could be done on
                screen, either offline or online.
