Socio-economic classes, household groups, land ownership and value
To examine the present-day distribution of land ownership and wealth
we now attempt to estimate land use, area and value by different groups of
households (see Table 5). This analysis relies on a breakdown of home ownership
and house types occupied by different socio-economic classes reported in
Table 19 of the 2015 Socio-Economic Survey (SES) and evidence on work status
of the adult population in Table 7 of the 2017 first-quarter Labour Force Survey
(LFS).
Here we distinguish the following household groups:
1) owner-occupiers: households occupying and using their own land
(land with registered title)
- farm households (2.6 million)
- home owners: farm workers, other employed, self-employed or
inactive (12.1 million) divided into low and higher income groups
of roughly equal size
2) landless: households with homes on land which they do not own,
whether rented or rent-free (8.4 million)
3) landowners: households owning substantial property that they do
not occupy or use themselves (0.2 million)
