This article explores the significant role of the Thai monarchy in nurturing, preserving,

and promoting traditional performing arts, including dance and drama, from the Sukhothai era
to the present, highlighting key contributions across various dynastic periods.

                   Abstract

The Thai monarchy has played a crucial role in the development, preservation, and
promotion of the performing arts throughout the nation’s history. From the Sukhothai era to

the present, kings and royal family members have supported and nurtured traditional dance
and drama as vital cultural expressions. These art forms, particularly Khon and Lakhon,

were central to royal ceremonies and rituals, symbolizing the monarchy’s divine authority
and the nation’s cultural identity. Through patronage, the monarchy has safeguarded these

traditions, fostering innovation while maintaining their roots in Thai history. The Rattanakosin
period, particularly under King Rama I and King Rama V, saw significant revitalization and

modernization of the arts, blending traditional and Western influences. Today, the performing
arts remain a cornerstone of Thai cultural heritage, with the monarchy continuing to play a key

role in their evolution and global promotion.

                   Introduction
The Thai monarchy has long been intertwined with the nation’s cultural heritage,

particularly through its role in promoting and preserving the performing arts. From the earliest
days of the kingdom, the monarchy recognized the importance of the arts in both public and

religious life. Dance and drama, key elements of Thai culture, have historically been supported
by kings and royal family members as a means to express religious devotion, celebrate royal

power, and entertain both the royal court and the public.
