Volume XVI-2024 (Special Issue)
The world community must realize the importance of sustainable development and pay
more attention in order to achieve these goals. Every sector matters, including governments,
business, societies, and public, working together to save the world from imminent disasters.
The Royal institutes in many countries play important roles in leading and collaborating
with various sectors in developing society, economy, and environment to reach the goals for
sustainable development. The following examples are:
● His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom has been a passionate advocate for
the environmental protection and architectural conservation since his time as Crown
Prince. His Royal Highness, Crown Prince William, launched the Earthshot Prize in 2020
to identify and scale the most innovative solutions to the world’s greatest environmental
challenges across 5 areas: nature, air, ocean, waste-free world, and climate.
● His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan has been interested in conservation and access
to clean water sources since his time as a university student. He delivered a keynote
speech via video at the 6 Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters held
th
at the United Nations Headquarters in 2023.
● The Royal Institutes of the Nordic countries, including Sweden, Norway, and Denmark,
all prioritize sustainable development. For instance, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess
Victoria has agreed to serve as the United Nations Ambassador for water and ocean.
● His Majesty King Mohammed VI has been a leader in agricultural development and
forest conservation. He launched the “GENERATION GREEN 2020-2030” agricultural
strategy, positioning Morocco as one of the leading African countries in sustainable
development.
The Thai Royal Institution has been a leader in sustainable development long before
the United Nations established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and continues to
play a significant role. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great was the true leader in
sustainable development, particularly through the concept of the Sufficiency Economy which
helped Thailand navigate economic challenges nearly 30 years ago. The principles of Sufficiency
Economy align closely with SDG no. 12, which focused on responsible consumption and
production. This approach provides practical guidelines to achieve sustainability across various
sectors (Avery, G.C. and Bergsteiner, H., 2016). In addition, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess
Sirindhorn has been a leader in implementing the Sufficiency Economy and other principles
related to the SDGs into real-world practices, long before the launch of the United Nations SDGs.
