Abstract
The Royal Institution has played a crucial role in the development of science in Thailand
since the reign of King Rama IV. There is clear evidence of serious scientific study within
the Royal Institution and courtiers. King Rama IV is considered the father of Thai science.
During the reign of King Rama V, widespread educational opportunities were granted to the
Thai people, culminating in a comprehensive education system by the reign of King Rama VI,
which included the introduction of science education at the tertiary level for the first time in 1921.
King Rama VII endorsed the establishment of the Royal Society of Siam in 1926, which later
led to the founding of the Science Society of Thailand in 1948. King Rama IX graciously accepted
the Science Society of Thailand under Royal Patronage in 1951 and was himself a scientist who
studied and developed knowledge, leading to patented inventions under his royal cypher,
the first by any monarch in Thai history as well as the world. King Rama X’s initial royal command
emphasized “we will continue, preserve, enhance, and rule the land justly for the perpetual
benefit and happiness of the people,” focusing on building quality individuals through continued
education. Nearly 500 scholarship students have graduated with bachelor’s degrees and entered
the field of science. Additionally, he has continued to support Her Royal Highness Princess Maha
Chakri Sirindhorn and Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Walailak, both of whom have been
involved in various scientific projects initiated during the reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
