Abstract: Reference Sounds in Music

Reference sounds, which can be found in all genres of music, are primarily
specific sounds that indicate music characters in various styles according to the
composer’s imagination. The most influential reference musical sounds are those
in major and minor scales, comprising seven notes. A large number of works in
the music world are based on these two scales. Using such scales has long been

universal during the past three centuries. This article explores the significance
of reference sounds using Western harmony principles and historical concepts,
as evident in a 300–year–old and notable textbook titled Traité de l’harmonie
written by Jean–Philippe Rameau. This textbook was later translated into
English and titled Treatise on Harmony by Philip Gossett, and has recently
been translated into Thai by Natchar Pancharoen. As one of the most praised
and cited music theory textbooks, its content demonstrates the progressive

development of music theory on the scientific basis of musical sounds.
