Abstract: Psychology of Psychological Reactance: Do Not Read This Article

According to psychological reactance theory, if an individual’s freedom is
threatened or eliminated, the motivational state of psychological reactance
will be aroused. The person will try to restore the threatened or eliminated
freedom (Brehm, 1966). Freedom has 2 characteristics: specific freedom and
subjective nature of freedom. Conditions that affect psychological reactance
1) importance of freedom 2) number, scope, and proportion of eliminated
freedom 3) relative importance of freedom 4) implied threatened freedom
5) elimination of freedom. Effects of psychological reactance. Theory development
and testing are in 5 waves (Rosenberg & Siegel, 2018). 1) Wave 1: Theory proposal
and testing 2) Wave 2: Contributions from clinical psychology 3) Wave 3:
Contributions from communication research 4) Wave 4: Measuring reactance
5) Wave 5: Return to motivation.
