Abstract: Thai Society and Monarchical Institution: Historical Perspective

The Royal Society of Thailand
Historical evidence especially that from primary sources- such as inscription,
archival, chronicle, announcement (legal act), various offices’ documents, informal
letter, journey memory of foreigners, oral literature, literature, painting, photo,
archaeological evidence and oral history information-compiled, studied, analyzed
and synthesized using historical research methodology has been an empirical
evidence pointing out that the Thai society and monarchical institution have had

very closely interrelated. The monarchical institution has been very important to
maintain consistence of society and culture. The monarch holds the position of
head of state who has protect the Thai society from foreign invasion and threat,
maintained the country in the aspects of governance, foreign relations, as well as
economic, social and cultural matters. The monarch therefore sustained Thainess
through the time period of more than 700 years since the Sukhothai Era at the
late 18 Buddhist Century until now. The monarchical institution is therefore

the oldest institution that has been in existence simultaneously with the Thai
society throughout the history of Thailand and the Thai nation.
