Smartphone and Thai Language Teaching/Learning
For more than a century, language teaching in Thailand utilized
“blackboard and chalk.” Before that students used a slate and a slate pencil
to practice writing.

In the day of blackboard and chalk, the teacher wrote the lesson on the
board, while the students copied it in their workbooks. Some teachers would read
the information aloud, giving additional explanation. Students who were keen
in copying might insert the additional explanation. Even after the board color has
changed from black to white in many schools, it remains “blackboard” in Thai.
The introduction of the whiteboard and the use of a special pencil
protected teachers from respiratory distress. Notes and pictures could also be
temporarily attached to a whiteboard. Later on, an electronic whiteboard was
developed that could be connected to a computer.
