discussed critically. Thus, conclusions can be drawn from modern knowledge.

Teaching and Academic Meetings in the Digital Age

The classroom now can be called a “digital classroom.” The blackboard
and the whiteboard have given way to the computer. Presentations are projected
on screen and data from the Internet is selected for critical discussion. Thai
Language class is no longer boring. The “real” language that people use is
discussed and determined why it is so. The pronunciation of a word in any
language can be checked on line. Whether an English word is pronounced by

an American or British speaker does not matter; the class can listen to it and
choose their preference. Then they realize that some words have been pronounced
incorrectly in Thai for a long time!
Academic meetings also benefit from this new technology. Now corrections
can be made during the session. Some members of the committee use their own
computer or smartphone to check data right away. Thus, conclusions are drawn
from data and academic discussion, not from “feelings” or personal opinions.

Using Smartphones to Learn Thai

In some urban Thai homes, there is a new member of the household,
called “assistant housewife” or “nurse’s aid.” These individuals mostly come from
rural areas of Thailand or from neighboring countries. Actually, they are employees,
most of whom are not well-educated in school, but who earn enough for their
children to receive a higher education, some even earning a PhD or MD.
