                   King Rama VII (1925–1935)

King Rama VII’s reign was marked by a challenging period of economic hardship and
political change, which deeply affected the arts in Thailand. Amid the Great Depression and

the transition from absolute monarchy to a constitutional system, King Rama VII took measures

to sustain traditional Thai performances, recognizing their cultural importance during a time of
social transformation. His efforts helped preserve these art forms as sources of national identity
and continuity. In addition to supporting traditional theatre, King Rama VII showed a keen interest

in the emerging medium of film. Understanding the potential of cinema as a modern storytelling

platform, he promoted its development within Thailand, laying the groundwork for what would
become a significant industry. His support of film demonstrated his forward-thinking approach
to the arts, balancing respect for tradition with an openness to new forms of expression.

                   King Rama VIII (1935–1946)

During King Rama VIII’s reign, administrative power rested in the hands of Prime Minister
Plaek Pibulsongkhram, who oversaw much of the government and cultural policy. As such,

the period saw limited direct royal influence on the arts or cultural initiatives traditionally

associated with the monarchy. However, King Rama VIII’s presence during this challenging time
provided a sense of continuity and unity for the Thai people. His reign, though brief and under
unique circumstances, found some imminent royal families who patronized Khon and lakon

which helped maintaining a d continuing national identity and stability amidst profound political

                   changes.

                   King Rama IX (1946–2016)

King Rama IX, who played a particularly significant role in the revival of traditional Thai

performances. He fostered a renewed interest in traditional arts, commissioning new works
and supporting the revival of ancient forms. His reign also saw the establishment of
organizations dedicated to the preservation of Thai cultural heritage, including the performing arts.

The monarchy’s continued support for the arts ensured that traditional performances remained

an important part of national celebrations and royal ceremonies.
King Rama IX’s actively supported ballet as a part of Thailand’s artistic development.
His patronage helped ballet and other performing arts gain recognition and flourish within

the country, blending traditional Thai aesthetics with global influences. King Rama IX’s efforts

in fostering the arts contributed to a vibrant cultural landscape, emphasizing the importance of
