                  National Language Policy
In 2002, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) in collaboration with the

Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the U.S. Embassy in Thailand organized an English
Language Development Project in schools and universities. Discussions were held to develop
both English and Thai languages, and the Royal Society was invited to participate. These

discussions led to the formulation of the language policy guidelines.
The project reached its climax on May 22-25, 2006, when the 1 WORLD CONGRESS ON
                                                                                      st
THE POWER OF LANGUAGE: THEORY, PRACTICE AND DEVELOPMENT was held at the Queen Sirikit

Later, on 13 December 2006, the Royal Society appointed the committee to draft the

national language policy, consisting of 6 main policies as follows:
                      (1) Thai language policy for Thai students and Thai people, including Thai language for
                  foreigners as a foreign language

                      (2) Local language policy, both Tai language family and other language families
                      (3) Economic language policy and neighboring language policy

                      (4) Language policy for those seeking employment in Thailand

The main points of the national language policy are to preserve and promote Thai
language, which is the national language, as well as local languages, including Tai language family
and other language families, in order to preserve the diversity of language and cultural identity,
