Teaching English in a VUCA World
Namthip Anantsupamongkul, Savika Varaporn
Abstract
A VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world has brought rapid
changes to our daily lives and affected education, including English language
teaching. Language teachers and educators have to quickly adapt themselves to
the unexpected circumstances and prepare learners for a VUCA future. This paper
presents perspective on teaching English in three key areas: 1) Challenges of
teaching English to Thai students in the rapidly changing era of disruption,
2) Strategies and techniques for effective English language teaching, particularly
in Thai context, and 3) The significance of continuing professional development
for EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers. Understanding these points will
promote innovation, research, and development of new and effective teaching and
learning management in the future.
Keywords: English language teaching (ELT); VUCA world; English as a foreign
