In a country where there is still injustice and where political corruption has
become even worse in a parliamentary democracy, literature that deals with the
condition of the people, particularly those who are disadvantaged, is not unnecessary.
For without concern for the needs of human life, literature itself could become
superfluous in the long run.
About the author
Pornsan Watanangura. Fellow of the Royal Society of Thailand, Academy of Arts and
Emeritus Professor Kittikhun, Dr. phil at the Department of Western Languages, Faculty of
Arts, Chulalongkorn University. President, The Thai-German Society She has been studying
at the Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg and receiving Magister Artium M.A. (1980),
Dr. phil (1985) in Applied Linguistics, New German Literature, and Music (Musikwissenschaft).
Her publication in Thai, German and English comprise not only on linguistics, comparative
literature and intercultural Studies, but the opening of Siam/Thailand for European culture
and on the reception of Buddhism in the West. She led the translation project of the first
translation of Thomas Mann’s early telling stories (Erzählung) in Thailand. Prof. Dr. Pornsan
was awarded the “Bundesverdienstkreuz am Band” from the Fedel Republic of Germany for
her contribution in the field of German Language and Literature, Intercultural Germanistik
and Thai-German cultural Relations (The Royal White Elefant Highest Rank) in the year 2018.
She received the Decoration “Maha Paramaporn Chang Pueak” in 2009.
