Abstract: Communication and Lifestyles, Thainess, Under the Pressure of globalization
Professor Emeritus Sukanya Sudbanthad
Fellow of The Academy of Moral and Political Sciences,
The Royal Society of Thailand
The article was based on the Future Thailand Project which covers social,
economic, environmental, political and cultural perspectives. It was aimed at
the upcoming changes in lifestyle and Thainess in the next 20 years after the
communication disruption, in which the cultural dimension was scanned such
that some strategic decision-making could be recommended. The foresight
research methodology was used including Steep-V analysis tool, expert panels,
and literature review to forecast the plausible scenarios both desirable and
undesirable.
The Research found that Thailand’s cultural baseline scenario fluctuates
with digital media development, from which subcultures emerge tending towards
homogeneity. The products of traditional thai arts had been more or less
transformed for commercial purpose, but on the communal understanding
that thai nobility can never be neglected. There are disparities among age groups.
The elder generation had been attached to the past and worried about the
incoming changes while the younger of the working age conformed themselves
to the digital technology and accessed notably to worldwide information.
The disparity affected their global visions which might lead to undesirable social
scenario. However, the research underlined the thai wisdom of harmonizing
the dissimilarities that might be implemented towards a peaceful reconciliation
between both groups.
