Abstract: Oral health and quality of life in the elderly

The number of older persons in Thailand has been increasing

continuously, leading the nation to an ageing society. It is important to take care
of physical and mental health, including oral health, of the elders. Quality of
life in this population should be focused. Older persons usually have impacts
from oral problems with accumulating conditions. Oral health is an important
aspect of physical health that can affect quality of life in the elderly. Therefore,
oral health-related quality of life, OHRQoL, in older persons should be
assessed. OHRQoL is a multidimensional construct that reflects individual’s

comfort when eating, sleeping, and engaging in social interaction; self-esteem;
and satisfaction with respect to oral health. Oral diseases and conditions affecting
OHRQoL include dental caries, periodontitis, tooth wear, tooth loss, masticatory
deficiency and denture condition. OHRQoL should be measured in the oral and
dental health survey to assess oral impact on daily performance. The outcomes
will be useful for oral health policy and determination of cost-effectiveness of
oral care/treatments as well as other related preparations.
