As Buddhadasa has stated, Buddhdhamma can be realized only through
insight. So it seems that in teaching moral concepts, the most important part is
the study of moral behavior. From the social learning view point, also to study
moral behavioral potentiality, we must study three factors; (1) moral cognition:
(2) moral reaction and (3) moral behavior.
In Thailand beside The Buddhdhamma there has been the Ten Royal
Guiding Peinciples that are meant for the king of Thailand to govern people and
his kingdom. The Ten Principles can be translated as follows:
1. Dāna : giving
2. Sila : self conduct
3. Paricaga : giving up
4. Ajava : straightness
5. Maddava : gentleness
6. Topa : perseverance
7. Akkodha : non-anger
8. Avihimsa : not causing injury
9. Khanti : endurance or patience
10. Avirodhana : not going wrong
(Somdet Pra Nyansungvara: A special seuma, 1993)
The main data of moral behaviors finding in the research (1984) mentioned
earliest indicated that
1. Depend on self: the findings suggested that the moral behaviors such
as self-disciple, health care, accumulation of valuable properties etc
should be adopted.
2. Donation to society: In general the Thai people believe that the moral
behaviors such as donation, social works, are desirable.
3. Respect for the law: the findings also indicated that Thai people believe
the following moral behaviors should the adopted: following law and
order; belief in religion; respect for seniority.
4. Loyalty: Thai people believe in gratitude, keeping promises and honesty
5. Attachment to “mine”: the findings showed that one of Thai’s moral
behavior is that there should be no “attachment to mine”. They adopted
the following morality in their way of living: self-evaluation, self-esteem.
