Abstract: Think Ahead, Think Green for The Thai Economy

The past 6 years since the coup in 2014, Thai GDP annual growth rates
have lagged behind all the ASEAN countries. Some causes are linked to the
global economic slow-down and in the last few years to the impact of US-China
trade war. Other causes are the accumulated internal structural economic
problems of the Thai economy which require more innovative policies to deal
with them, but are not forth coming. Meanwhile the government continues
to deploy the old economic development strategies of export-led growth;

which may not have many linkages to the rest of the society. Export will remain
important, but there will have to be new strategies in line with changing global
economic situations. With the new factor of global warming and its negative
impact on agricultural growth, old attempts to get out of the economic doldrums
becomes less effective and more problematic. The prospects for increased
poverty and inequality loom large. However, this new factor of climate change
can be seen as an opportunity to shift the economic game, towards promoting
investment in green economy as suggested by the UN, Sustainable Development
Goals Report 2019. By so doing, with good planning and sequencing, higher
economic growth, reduction in poverty and inequality and creation of nice rural
society and cities for everyone to live in, can be advanced at the same time

in the medium term of less than a decade.
