The Contribution of the Thai Monarchy to the Evolution of Communication*

Abstract
This article examines the benevolent and profound impact of the Thai monarchy on
the evolution of communication arts, media, and national development, marking the auspicious
occasion of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s 72 Birthday. Tracing back over a century,

the study highlights the monarchy’s pivotal role in shaping Thailand’s communication landscape
from the early modernization efforts under King Chulalongkorn, who introduced electronic media,
to the current digital era. By employing a mixed-method approach of historical analysis,
case studies, and academic research, the study explores how the monarchy has strategically used
various media forms and technology to promote national unity, enhance educational opportunities,
and drive economic and social progress. The research delves into the monarchy’s collaboration
strategies in establishing key communication agencies, supporting infrastructure development,
and fostering partnerships across government, private sector, and civil society. Additionally,
the innovative use of media to promote cultural heritage and address significant developmental
challenges such as sustainable economy and public health is analyzed. The article also
considers the challenges and opportunities of the digital era, emphasizing the need to combat
digital inequality and misinformation while adapting to changing public expectations. Through
comprehensive insights into the enduring impact of the Thai monarchy, this study contributes
valuable knowledge on the potential of traditional institutions to adapt and evolve amidst rapid
technological and social changes, highlighting the importance of visionary leadership and strategic
collaboration in leveraging communication arts for positive societal transformation.
