Marijuana (or Ganja) and hemp are plants belonging to the genus
Cannabis, which are widely cultivated for medicinal purposes in many countries.
In Thailand, it has been used as a Thai herb medicine being recorded since the
reign of King Narai in Ayutthaya period from 1656 to 1688. However, with the
influence of national great power, after the World War II, the use of Cannabis
plants were discontinued. Cannabis plants were announced under the Thai law
th
enforcement designated them as a category 5 narcotic. Fortunately, in 9 June
2022 the announcement of the Ministry of Public Health stipulated that
“All parts of cannabis” and cannabis extracts containing less than 0.2% THC
or CBD are not considered addictive drugs and allowed to be used legally. As a
result, Cannabis plants have become essential agricultural economic crops and
are distributed widely again. However, cannabis is a pest infested plant.
This results in inevitable damage to the cannabis plant. Farmers therefore need
to use chemicals in their disposal to reduce the damage. Yet, Cannabis is a
fibrous plant that has the ability to absorb chemicals and heavy metals from
the environment. These chemicals can be left behind in cannabis-containing
products or medicines. Therefore, the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes
should refrain from using chemical pesticides and should turn to biological
control and disposal methods instead.
