6. The Friendship Between Siam and European Nations
During the reign of King Prajatibok the closest friendship the Siamese
royals had was with Denmark, with Belgium and the Netherlands in second
place. Starting with Rama V or King Chulalongkorn, the members of the
Siamese and Danish royal families had been visiting each other. The Danish
company East Indies offered the ship Meonia to King Prajatibok as a means
of transport for the trip to Europe, free of charge. Even in the difficult time when
King Prajatibok was on a boat to his exile in Songkhla during the Bavorndej
uprising, by chance, the Danish ship Walai had saved the Siamese King and
his entourage from a storm. The crew was brought to safety in Songkhla by
the Danes.
