Thai architecture is a national asset that has developed over a long
period of time. Because it involves both art and science, architecture is
considered to be three-dimensional works of art in which people can enter
and occupy or use. Therefore a work of architecture has to be strong, safe
and durable with aesthetic charm as well as conveniently functional.
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great was highly versatile in
this field as can be seen from his initiatives and critical comments that he
gave to architects on many occasions.
The author had the honor of serving His Majesty in this regard as the
architect for several works, namely, Phra Mahadhat Chalermrajsaddha pagoda
and a rotunda for housing the statue of His Majesty at Wat Thai Kusinara
Chalermraj in Kushinagar, the Republic of India, the Buddhavas consecrated
area of Wat Dhammadharo temple in Canberra, Australia, and the rotunda for
the statue of His Majesty at the Grand Palace in Bangkok. All of which His
Majesty was involved in the design process and demonstrated his proficiency
in Thai architecture.
Phra Mahadhat Chalermrajsaddha is a pagoda in which His Majesty
scrupulously gave comments, criticisms and suggestions on the design at
virtually every stage of the process because it is a pagoda that he had
conceived and built dedicated to the Lord Buddha in the Holy Land of
Buddhism.
Keywords: Design, His Majesty King Bhimibol Adulyadej the Great, Royal
decision, Supreme Patriarch, auspicious date.
