Abstract: Big Data: Technologies and Utilizations
Professor Dr. Wanlop Surakampontorn
Associate Fellow of the Academy of Science,
The Royal Society of Thailand.
This article firstly outlines the development of digital technology that
connected the world of information into one system. It then discusses data in
the era of digital technology that are generated in the Internet system, which
is referred to as big data. The big data is imported in various forms as: the
data which are the structured data, such as tables, graphs, or charts, and
the unstructured data, such as voice, text, images, or video. Generally, big data
is the data that consists of five main characteristics, namely: Volume, Velocity,
Variety, Veracity and Value. The term big data also refers to technology-related
analysis, systematic data extraction or management with large and complex
data sets beyond being managed by usual software or data processing devices.
The ecosystem of big data analytic is also discussed, which consists of high-
performance computers, large storage and backup system and software
program for the analysis. However, an organization may not need to have their
own infrastructure, but can rely on cloud-based computer technology. The
cloud computing technology provides services that cover the use of the
processor, online storage and software tools. This technology enables small
organizations to install their own data analytic system that saver time and
reduces cost. The sequence in which data is analyzed is also outlined.
Examples that overview the use of big data technology to drive the
organization activities are given, and also examples of companies or service
units that driven by large data technology are reviewed.
