The United States and the fu- ture of Thailand. New York: Prargen Pub- lishers; 1970. ÚÛı Abstract Relations between Thailand and the United States of America before World War II Piyanat Bun-nak Associate Member, the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, the Royal Institute, Thailand Thai-American relations began officially during the reign of King Rama III in the nineteenth century, when diplomatic contact was initiated. Relations between the two countries were not lim- ited to inter-governmental ties, however. American missionaries also came to Thailand, bringing increased scientific and technological progress to the Kingdom. Relations between the two coun- tries were consistently cordial. Before World War II, friendly ties were maintained, with the United States assuming the role of a technically and politically superior friendly power. The United States usually supported Thailand in the political, economic, and social spheres. Most importantly, the United Sates played a crucial role in supporting Thailand on the world political stage, notably in the renegotiation of unequal treaties, which the Thais had concluded with various countries during the reign of King Rama IV (Mongkut). Thailand was thus able to free itself of onerous treaty commit- ments, and regain full national sovereignty during the reign of King Rama VIII (Ananda Mahidol) in the middle of the twentieth century. Key words : Relations between Thailand and USA, World War II
