Abstract Tai Dialects and Inscriptions Prasert Na Nagara Fellow, the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, the Royal Institute, Thailand Tai dialects help in reading Thai inscriptions and classical literature. They may help to point out the origin of the Tai and the successive migrations of Tai tribes. Thus, every Tai dialect should be preserved. The meaning of a word in an inscription which is lost in the standard Thai dialect may still be in use in other dialects inside and outside of Thailand. But the matching of words in different dialects requires the knowledge of sound changes in consonants, vowels, and tones. Index cards for all dubious words should be written together with the sentences in which they appear. Different examples may serve to clarify the meaning of each dubious word. Pairs of interchangeable consonants are mentioned: for example, b and w, f and l. Words from the White Tai, Khun, Southern Chuang, and Southern Thai dialects are cited as examples.
