Abstract Rearing Dairy Buffaloes for the Milk Business Maneewan Kamonpatana Associate Member, the Academy of Science, the Royal Institute, Thailand Thailand as a country in the “Monsoon Region” has been referred to as a rice paddy: not only is it a leading exporter of rice, Thailand is also one of the richest food-producing countries in the world. Water buffaloes are closely connected with Thailand’s rice culture, which is related to the spiritual security of rural people, particularly farmers. The establishment of the “Buffalo-Rearing School”, or as it is called in short the “Buffalo School” was intended to conserve the rice culture and at the same time to develop buffalo production so as to improve livestock breeds available to farm- ers. The twenty-first century is a good time for Thai farmers to control the price of buffaloes in order to sustain the rural economy. Thai buffaloes, as a breed that thrives in swampy conditions, possess the potential to be developed as dairy producers. Dairy buffaloes produce milk of high quality, which is used to produce mozzarella cheese. This is a good business for providing farmers with a higher income. Therefore, the Buffalo School will be a place for the incubation and integration of local wisdom with new technologies to meet concurrent developments in the business world. The Buffalo School is intended to advance the foundation of the buffalo-rearing industry in addition to the role it plays in Thailand’s rice culture. The Buffalo School is also intended to produce a multiple impact known as Three in One : i.e. Three elements (education, economy and social development) will be integrated into One (the buffalo-rearing profession).
