Its essence is in line with the economic conditions and the Thai society since it is based on the Buddhist beliefs, attitudes and values. The touchstone is the view on human beings’ happiness, which is derived from the balance between material and spiritual matters - - the so-called “the Golden Mean” or the moderate course. Activities in line with the Buddhist economic concept are characterized by their simplicity. Emphasis is placed on the production and consumption of essential, economic goods in the most efficient manner. The technology used is derived from the local wisdom, and importance is attached to labor rather than capital, taking into account happiness resulting from dedication for the whole without any exploitation. Apart from the benefit of the Buddhist economic concept that can be applied to the Thai economic and social development, it can be applied to the development of energy conservation in terms of creating energy saving habits and raising wise, proper and efficient use of energy. In addition, it can help with the promotion of renewable energy production and utilization to replace fossil fuel consumption. However, in order to create such a concept, it is important that the Buddhist way of life be raised since one’s childhood through the process of behavioral transmission so as to inhabit one’s mind with Buddhist beliefs, attitudes and values via such institutions as family, school and religion. The Thai society should apply the approach of the Buddhist economic concept to the Thai economic and social development since it involves structural change and is in harmony with the Thai ways of life, in which Buddhism has been worshipped for long. To earn one’s living according to the Buddhist economic concept will lead to sustainable development. Particularly in the energy conservation matter, it would help reduce imports of energy, protect the environment and improve the quality of life of Thai people both in physical and in spiritual terms. Key Words : the moderate course, economics, Buddhism, energy conservation
