Unpublished Ph.D. thesis in Demography, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol university. Abstract Situation of the Elderly in Thailand Chai Podhisita Associate Fellow of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, The Royal Institute, Thailand Thai society is entering the state of “old population”. The process leading to this phenomenon takes a relatively short time, about 20-30 years. The entire phenomenon is viewed as resulting from change in the population structure directly related to rapid fertility decline which is accompanied by extended life expectancy of the Thai people. As a result, old age dependency ratio is rising which, in turn; implies increasing burden and responsibility in part of the family and society to provide appropriate care for the elderly. Considering the fact that this demographic transition is taking place in the changing socioeconomic landscape, it has significant implications for the elderly care. It is likely that from this point onward more and more burden and responsibility in the elderly care will shift from the family to the public sector. Although existing evidence indicates some effort toward that direction, several dimensions of the elderly care still need to be improved. Public policy concerning retirement age, for instance, may have to be changed in order to postpone the public responsibility for the elderly care.
