The Journal of the Royal Institute of Thailand Vol. 30 No. 4 Oct.-Dec. 2005 1020 æ√–√“¡™“¥° : °“√ª√— ∫‡ª≈’Ë ¬π®“°«√√≥°√√¡µâ π·∫∫ ¡“‡ªì π«√√≥°√√¡Õ— µ≈— °…≥å Abstract Phra Ram Chadok : Transition from the Original Literary Work to the Attalaksana Literature Niyada Lausunthorn Fellow of the Academy of Arts, The Royal Institute, Thailand The purpose of the present research is to make a detailed study of Rama Jataka, one of the most important Laotian literary works, so that the transition from the influx of written literature influenced by the Indian Ramayana to the present version in genuine Laotian garb could be evaluated. The role of the hero has turned into the type of the later Laotian heroes whose prominent functions are summed up in the acquisition of power and the expansion of the vast territory for their homeland. The works is divided into 8 chapters. Chapter One focusses on the details of the research topic. A summary of the Rama Jataka is given in Chapter Two, while Chapter Three concentrates on the historical studies. Chapter Four is on the analytical studies of the Rama Jataka. Chapter Five, Six and Seven deal successively with an appreciation of Rama Jataka as a Jataka story, its literary arts, and the geographical regions mentioned by name in the work. Chapter Eight is the conclusion. The research concludes that Rama Jataka serves as a piece of literature that encompasses all aspects of life and the world-views of the owners of this piece of literature. It also records how each role in the society interacts with one another. It may be claimed that certain stereotypes for each character can be subtly derived from the Jataka. Since the Rama Jataka is often utilized as the preaching theme by monks, it is natural that proverbs, wise sayings, myths and legends concerning with the particular regions could have been conveniently added piecemeal to the main story in the time past. If we were to compare the stories of Rama of various cultures, we could easily regard Rama Jataka as a piece of literature that has been transformed to represent Laos’s identity in an outstanding way.
