Abstract Gnathostomiasis Nibha Jaroonvesama Associate Fellow of the Academy of Science, The Royal Institute, Thailand Gnathostomiasis is the disease caused by round worm and is one of the most important animal- food borne helminthic infection in Thailand. The cause of disease in man is Gnathostoma spinigerum acquired normally by eating raw or under cooked meat of fresh water fish especially swamp eel, frog, snake etc which are the second intermediate host and harbor the third stage larvae in the muscle and liver. Man is the accidental host so the third stage larva can not grow to be the mature worm. After eating the infected second intermediate host, the larva will creeping out of the stomach to nearly every organ of the body and cause sign and symptom of intermittent migratory swelling where the subcutaneous tissues of extremities, thrunk and head are frequently found. Paralysis or death will occur if it goes into spinal cord of brain. Diagnosis is performed by history of eating raw of under cooked meat as mentioned above and developing of migratory swelling including high white blood cell and eosinophil counts in the blood and positive immunological test. The disease can be cured by outward migration of parasite from the patient. At present, albendazole and ivermectin the two reported drugs can cure the disease. Key words : Gnathostoma spinigerum, fresh water fishes, migratory swelling
