ÚıÙ˘ ™≈¥“ ‡√◊ Õß√— °…å ≈‘ ¢‘ µ 579 Abstract The Meanings in “Bot Plaeng Kaya” of an (In)sane Female Poet Cholada Ruengruglikit Associate Fellow of the Academy of Arts, The Royal Institute, Thailand “Bot Plaeng Kaya”, the transformation scene, in Unarut roi rueang is unique and outstanding compared to those in other poets’ works. In the past, this scene was believed that it was the work of an insane female poet, Khun Suwan, because of the unchange of the characters after transformation. This paper aims to argue this idea by searching for the hidden meanings of changes in this scene. Through Khun Suwan’s language use and knowledge of various characters from many Thai tales, three kinds of guises are revealed - the different status of the same character in different costumes, the disguise, and the magical transfor- mation. The magical transformation is focused in this study and three various types are discussed. These are the transformation of creatures in the same race or group, of an animal figure into that of a human being, and of a same human figure with some changes after the transformation. The latter is classified into four groups. These are the magical transformation from a young man into an older one, from an old man into a younger one, from male into female, and vice versa. Most of these four transformation groups already existed in ancient Thai literary works. It is remarkable that most of these groups are obviously seen in the Chak chak wong wong, a special type of Thai tales which were well-known in the reign of King Rama V. In Chak chak wong wong tales, there is a great variety of miraculous transfor- mation. It can be concluded that Khun Suwan had influenced on later poets who expand their imagination of magical transformation which interestingly colors the contents of the stories. Khun Suwan’s good knowledge of Thai language use, of Thai literature, the correct grouping of different status of the same character, and the uniqueness of transformation in Unarut roi rueang can well confirm that Khun Suwan is not insane at all.
