Abstract A Dream and Good or Bad Events in Thai Literature Cholada Ruengruglikit Associate Fellow of the Academy of Arts, The Royal Institute, Thailand A dream is an event one sees while sleeping. The dreams in Thai literature can be divided into two groups: the dreams foretelling good events and the dreams indicating the coming of bad events. The dreams foretelling good events could involve the events that happen at the present time and those that will happen shortly. As for the dreams indicating the coming of bad events, they could involve some past incidents of the characters, the events which are happening as well as the events which will happen in the future. This study found that the dreamers could be both men and women. Women dream more often than men, but men’s dreams cover wider matters than those of women. Women’s dreams usually deal with the matters of themselves or those of their family members and relatives. Men’s dreams, on the other hand, involve their political power, the matters of the country, and their friends. Meanings of the dreams are sometimes expressed directly, but most of themhave to be interpreted. It should be noted that the symbols used in the dreams in Thai literature are very similar. The readers therefore could easily interpret the meanings of dreams through their reading experience of Thai literary works. In addition, the dreams in Thai literature interestingly reflect the characters’ hope, desire, or fear. According to this study, the dreams in Thai literature can have many roles. Firstly, they give the readers the clues about the important incidents that will happen to the dreamers or to some characters being closed to them. Secondly, the dreams keep the readers’ interest in the story by stimulating the readers to find out whether the events happening to those characters are the same as their dreams. Thirdly, the dreams in the text can give the readers the ideas in interpreting the characters’ dreams by themselves. Fourthly, the dreams are elements that give the readers much pleasure as they try to interpret the meanings of the characters’ dreams before revealed by the poets. Inserting the characters’ dreams in Thai literature therefore is one of the interesting techniques of Thai poets. Key words : the characters’ dreams, good or bad events in the story
