The five Thai dialects are Songkhla Thai dialect, Nakhon Si Thammarat (Nakhon) Thai dialect, Korat Thai dialect, Phetchabun Thai dialect, and Chiang Mai Thai dialect. The result of the analysis shows that some words in the five dialects have the same meanings as their cognates in Bangkok Thai. Others have similar meanings, and the rest have different meanings. This paper focuses particularly on words with similar or different meanings and classifies those words into two categories, i.e., 1) words that have the same or similar meanings, which are labeled as “Same Words”, and 2) words that have different meanings, which are called “Different Words”. 1. Same Words, which can be sub-categorized into two types: 1.1 Words found in Songkhla and Korat dialects which are considered to be the same as words in Bangkok because of their semantic similarity or having a trace of the same meaning. e.g. /kh ε :/ means, in Bangkok Thai, (adv.) “just or merely”, as in r III a η kh ε : n í : m â j tc η r ó pkuan khaw rck It is just a small matter, no need to bother him. In Songkhla, it means “nearby”, as in paj kh ε : kh ε : m â j na:n lc:j Going nearby, it doesn’t take long. ˆ ˆ c ˆ ˇ c ` ˆ ˆ ˆ e
