Wannapin Editorial Board in World History Encyclopaedia Editorial committee: America, The Royal Institute, Thailand Lyndon Baines Johnson was the 36 th president of the United States (1963-1969) from the Democrat Party. He was in the House of Representatives (1943-1947) and in the Senate (1949-1961) from Texas. Johnson had been the majority leader in the Senate from 1956-1961 which made him one of the greatest political figures of the United States. He was a very skillful politician in getting members of the Congress for important votes. During his presidential time Congress had passed several major reform bills on economy, society , and poverty. However, his escalation of the U.S. military for victory of the war in Vietnam had contributed to swelling public demonstrations which finally led to his announcement not to seek presidential ree- lection in 1968.
