Abstract Nationalism in Classical Music Natchar Socatiyanurak Associate Fellow of the Academy of Arts, The Royal Institute, Thailand Nationalism in classical music was first evident towards the end of the 18 th century, and deeply rooted from the middle of the 19 th century to the 20 th century in countries as Russia, France, Norway, Finland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Spain, England, the United States, including those in Latin America and in the East. Classical music composers in Thailand have followed footsteps of the Nationalists in preserving the Thai taste by employing musical idioms quoting from Thai folk music, traditional Thai music, or excerpts from Thai history, folklore and known literature, or touches from Buddhism and the Thai monarchy. These composers seek for new nuances which differ from that of the Western, so that their compositions more or less convey Thai identity. Nevertheless, in the realm of globalization, composers nowadays tend to mix musical flavor of other regions within their compositions as well, rather than merely making use of their own musical identity. Key words : nationalism, classical music, composer
