Abstract His Majesty the King: King of Righteousness and Philosopher King * Piyanart Bunnag Associate Fellow of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, The Royal Institute, Thailand His Majesty the King û s thoughts and actions demonstrate his being a true thammaracha (King of Righteousness) according to Buddhist belief , as well as a ç Philosopher King é . He attaches great importance to righteousness in leading one û s life , to looking at other people and the world with loving-kindness or metta , as well as to the equality of people in society. The King û s thoughts and opinions ç were born and accumulated é from his own character as well as from a ç learning process é that he received from the Princess Mother while he was still young. From the time of his accession to the throne in 1946 till the present (2006) , a total of sixty years , His Majesty û s thoughts and initiatives have been realized through his activities on behalf of his subjects û peace and happiness , and the country û s , through several royal projects. These projects total around 3 , 000 , in the fields of agriculture , environment , develop- ment of water sources , vocational training , communications , public health , social welfare , and others. All these projects share some common characteristics: they are geared towards specific immediate problems , gradual development , encouragement of self-help , provision of appropriate knowledge and technologies , the conservation or improvement of natural resources , and of the environment. The King û s activities are aimed at sustainable national development which emphasizes the development of moral and intellectual as well as material well-being. It is also holistic in its approach. His Majesty attaches great importance to natural resources and the environment , especially water , because he believes that water is the ç lifeblood é of human beings.
