Bangkok: Aroon Abstract Experiences in Doing Translation Work Malithat Promathatavedi Associate Fellow of the Academy of Arts, The Royal Institute, Thailand Translation is a process of transferring ideas from one language to another by using correct and appropriate language, while the original meaning remains intact. The translator must be knowledgeable in both languages in the areas of structure, vocabulary, idiomatic expression, and grammar. He/She must acquire general knowledge in all fields and practice until skill is attained. An essential requirement is the use of dictionaries and reference books, especially in specific fields. The same principles apply in both translating from English to Thai and Thai to English. First one has to know the material one is working on. Then one must consider the type of material and know the differences between the structure and levels of the languages. One must also know the vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and specific vocabulary used in different fields. Knowledge about culture is essential. Lastly, one must be knowledgeable in all areas. As for the translation of literary work, it can be divided into prose and poetry. Verses should be paraphrased first before actual translation begins. They can be translated as prose or poetry depending on the circumstances. It is not compulsory for verses to rhyme. Apart from dictionary meaning, the translator has to look for the unwritten meaning by reading between the lines. When translating old texts, contemporary language should not be used, otherwise anachronism would occur. Check the facts, names of people and places and details for accuracy. In translating from Thai to English, the service of a native speaker should be sought to go over the translation to check the appropriate use of language and grammar. Working as a team is recommended for the exchange of ideas. In order to be a good translator, one must be broad-minded enough to accept criticism from others.
